What People Say

She left the Sweat at eighteen and became something none of them fully understand yet. This is the version everyone agrees on. Everything else is contested, partial, possibly wrong

The Sweat made her. The Sweat makes everyone, one way or another — you can't grow up surrounded by ritual and intention and women building their power from scratch without becoming something. What Jane became is harder to name than what Nadine became, or Apache, or the others. They all went one way. Jane went

She was brilliant at the Sweat. That much is agreed upon. Not in the obvious ways — in the oblique ways, the lateral ways, the ways that make teachers privately uncomfortable and publicly enthusiastic. She learned everything they offered and then asked questions that the teachers couldn't quite answer

The White Circle is an all-woman organization — a witch militia, if you want to be blunt — that takes action where the clinic builds infrastructure. Against magical and spiritual threat, against the structures that harm their people, against the things that move in the dark of the new world and call it ordinary. Nobody from the clinic has successfully established whether Jane Crow works for the White Circle, runs it, or simply is what the White Circle has been trying to become.

She was Apache's closest friend at the Sweat, before she left. Apache uses the word "complicated" when someone mentions Jane's name. Apache uses "complicated" the way other people use "I don't trust them and I won't say why."

Nadine has seen her twice since they were girls. Both times felt like being assessed. Both times Jane left before the conversation was finished. Both times, afterward, something had changed — something small, something hard to point to, something that turned out to matter.
